CategoriesTechnology & Computing

4G stands for Fourth generation of mobile telephony, a telecom abbreviation.

Mobile broadband standard based mainly on LTE, delivering typical download speeds of tens of megabits per second and enabling video streaming, video calling and app-based services on smartphones. It remains the backbone of mobile networks worldwide.

Example: There's no 5G here, but 4G is fast enough to stream the match in HD.

Usage notes

The ITU's IMT-Advanced requirements called for peak speeds of 1 Gbit/s for stationary users, which early LTE did not meet; in 2010 the ITU accepted operators' use of "4G" for LTE, WiMAX and HSPA+. LTE-Advanced later met the original goals. 4G networks are expected to coexist with 5G well into the 2030s.
