CategoriesTechnology & Computing

6G stands for Sixth generation of mobile telephony, a telecom abbreviation.

Next cellular generation under development, expected to launch commercially around 2030, with goals including higher capacity, very low latency, AI-native network design, integrated sensing and the use of new spectrum, possibly in sub-terahertz bands.

Example: Operators are already testing 6G concepts, though phones won't support it until around 2030.

Usage notes

The ITU approved its IMT-2030 framework for 6G in 2023. 3GPP began formal 6G studies in Release 20 and plans its first specifications in a following release later in the decade. Research focuses on spectrum between about 7 and 24 GHz as well as higher frequencies, and on combining terrestrial and satellite networks.
