2G stands for Second generation of mobile telephony, a telecom abbreviation.

Digital cellular networks introduced in the early 1990s, led by GSM, that added encryption, SMS text messaging and later basic data services. 2G remains in use in some countries for voice, machine-to-machine devices and emergency fallback.

Example: In the countryside my phone drops to 2G, so it can make calls but barely load email.

Usage notes

The first GSM call was made in Finland on July 1, 1991. US carriers such as AT&T shut down 2G networks from 2017, while many European operators planned to keep 2G running longer than 3G to support older devices and alarm systems. Data speeds of GPRS and EDGE, often called 2.5G and 2.75G, reached at most a few hundred kilobits per second.
