802.11n stands for IEEE 802.11n (High Throughput Wi-Fi), a telecom abbreviation.
Wi-Fi standard ratified in 2009, later branded Wi-Fi 4, that introduced MIMO antennas and 40 MHz channels in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, reaching up to 600 Mbit/s in theory.
Example: The smart plug only supports 802.11n on 2.4 GHz, so it can't join the 5 GHz network.
Usage notes
"Draft-n" routers went on sale from about 2007, before the standard was finalized. 802.11n's MIMO technology was a major step, using multiple antennas to send parallel data streams. Many low-cost smart-home devices still use 802.11n at 2.4 GHz for its range and low cost.
