1G stands for First generation of mobile telephony, a telecom abbreviation.

Analog cellular phone systems of the 1980s, which carried voice only, with no encryption and no data services. Calls could be overheard with radio scanners, and phones were large and expensive.

Example: Our 1G car phone in 1986 weighed more than a brick and cost a fortune per minute.

Usage notes

NTT launched the first commercial cellular network in Tokyo in 1979, the Nordic NMT system followed in 1981, and AMPS arrived in the United States in 1983. Analog phones were vulnerable to cloning, in which criminals copied identifiers to make calls billed to others. Digital 2G networks replaced 1G during the 1990s.
