TAA stands for Thoracic aortic aneurysm, a cardiology abbreviation.

Dilation of the aorta within the chest, involving the aortic root, ascending aorta, arch or descending aorta. Causes include hypertension, bicuspid aortic valve and inherited conditions such as Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndromes; the dangers are rupture and aortic dissection.

Example: CT angiogram: ascending TAA measuring 4.9 cm; annual imaging and strict BP control.

Usage notes

Ascending aneurysms are commonly repaired at about 5.5 cm, or smaller in genetic syndromes and in selected patients at experienced centers under the 2022 ACC/AHA aortic guideline. Thoracoabdominal aneurysms (TAAA) extend into the abdomen. The FDA warned in 2018 that fluoroquinolone antibiotics increase the risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection.
