1. Social-emotional learning

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Instruction and school practices that build skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making, the five competencies defined by the nonprofit CASEL. It is delivered through dedicated lessons, advisory periods and classroom routines.

Example: Morning meeting is part of our SEL program in every elementary classroom.

CASEL, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, was founded in 1994. SEL expanded rapidly after the pandemic, and in some states it became politically contested, with critics objecting to its content and supporters citing research on academic and behavioral benefits.

2. Single-engine land

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Aircraft class rating for airplanes with one engine that operate from land, the rating most private pilots hold. It appears on US pilot certificates as "Airplane Single Engine Land" (ASEL), alongside other classes such as multiengine land (MEL) and single-engine sea (SES).

Example: Logbook entry: 1.4 hours, C172, SEL, dual received, practice stalls and steep turns.

US airplane class ratings are single-engine land, multiengine land, single-engine sea and multiengine sea. Adding a seaplane rating requires no written test and is a popular weekend course. Logbooks typically include separate columns for each category and class to track experience.
