SEI stands for Sheltered English immersion, a K-12 education abbreviation.
Program model in which English learners are taught subject content in English using simplified language, visuals and structured supports, rather than through bilingual instruction. It was mandated by ballot measures in Arizona in 2000 and Massachusetts in 2002.
Example: Massachusetts teachers of English learners must hold an SEI endorsement.
Usage notes
Massachusetts loosened its English-only requirement through the LOOK Act of 2017, allowing districts to offer bilingual programs again. Arizona's SEI model once required four hours a day of English instruction. California repealed its similar Proposition 227 restrictions in 2016.
