1. Melbourne Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
Australia's second-busiest airport, located in Tullamarine about 23 kilometers northwest of Melbourne's CBD. Unlike Sydney, it has no curfew and operates 24 hours a day.
Example: SkyBus from MEL to Southern Cross runs every 10 minutes around the clock.
ICAO code YMML. Often called Tullamarine or "Tulla" by locals. Opened in 1970, replacing Essendon Airport. A long-awaited rail link to the city remains in planning. The same letters, MEL, mean minimum equipment list or multiengine land in aviation, unrelated to the airport.
2. Minimum equipment list
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Approved list of aircraft equipment that may be inoperative for a flight, with the conditions, time limits and procedures for dispatching anyway. A broken reading light can be deferred under the MEL, whereas an inoperative fire detection loop may ground the aircraft.
Example: Maintenance deferred the APU under the MEL, so we'll need a ground power cart and an air start at every stop.
Each operator's MEL is derived from the master minimum equipment list (MMEL) approved by the regulator for the aircraft type and cannot be less restrictive. Deferred items are placarded "INOP" and assigned repair categories A through D; category C items, for example, usually allow 10 days.
3. Multiengine land
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Aircraft class rating for airplanes with more than one engine operating from land, required to fly twins such as the Piper Seminole or Beechcraft Baron as pilot in command. Training concentrates on handling an engine failure safely.
Example: He added the MEL rating in a Seminole over three days of intensive training.
Written "Airplane Multiengine Land" (AMEL) on US certificates. Pilots who train in centerline-thrust twins such as the Cessna 337 receive a "limited to center thrust" restriction. The same initials also mean minimum equipment list in airline maintenance, a quite different concept; logbooks versus dispatch paperwork make the meaning clear.
