SID stands for Standard instrument departure, an aviation abbreviation.

Published IFR departure procedure that routes aircraft from the runway into the en-route structure along fixed headings, waypoints and altitudes, simplifying clearances and keeping departures clear of terrain and arriving traffic. Large airports publish many of them.

Example: Delta 801, cleared to Seattle via the SID, then as filed; climb via SID except maintain one-zero thousand.

Usage notes

SIDs carry a name plus a revision number that increments with every amendment. The phrase "climb via SID" authorizes pilots to follow all published altitude and speed restrictions. The FAA also publishes obstacle departure procedures (ODPs), which provide only terrain clearance and no ATC routing benefits.
