SIC stands for Second in command, an aviation abbreviation.
Pilot designated to assist or relieve the pilot in command, usually the first officer on an airliner or business jet. An aircraft certified for two pilots, or an operation that requires two, cannot legally depart without a qualified SIC.
Example: The charter company needs a type-rated SIC for the Challenger trip to Teterboro on Friday.
Usage notes
US pilots serving as SIC in aircraft requiring two pilots must meet the training requirements of 14 CFR 61.55, and an SIC type rating can be added to the certificate. The SIC is not always junior: on some long-haul flights a relief captain occupies the right seat. Unrelated to "sic" in writing, the Latin word marking a quoted error.
