XML stands for Extensible Markup Language, a programming abbreviation.

A markup language for storing and exchanging structured data with custom tags and strict rules for well-formed documents. It underlies office file formats, RSS feeds, SVG graphics, SOAP messages, Android layouts and many industry data standards.

Example: The supplier sends its price list as XML, so we validate it against their XSD schema.

Usage notes

Became a W3C Recommendation in February 1998, derived from SGML. Related standards include XSD for schemas, XPath for queries and XSLT for transformations. JSON replaced it for most web APIs because it is shorter and maps directly to programming-language objects, but XML remains entrenched in publishing, finance and government. Microsoft Office's .docx and .xlsx files are zipped XML.
