Sass stands for Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets, an Internet & web abbreviation.

A CSS preprocessor that adds variables, nesting, mixins, functions and partial files, then compiles to ordinary CSS that browsers understand. It is common in large front-end codebases and in frameworks such as Bootstrap.

Example: Bootstrap's source is written in Sass, so override the variables before compiling.

Usage notes

Designed by Hampton Catlin and developed by Natalie Weizenbaum, first released in 2006. The official spelling is "Sass", not all capitals. It offers two syntaxes: the original indented syntax in .sass files and the CSS-like SCSS syntax that became the default. Dart Sass is the reference implementation after LibSass was deprecated in 2020. Native CSS variables and nesting have reduced the need for preprocessors.
