1. One-time password

Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations

A password or numeric code valid for only one login or transaction, usually for a few minutes, sent by SMS or email or generated by an authenticator app or hardware token. Banks use OTPs to confirm payments and new logins.

Example: Never share the OTP from your bank, even with someone claiming to be from the bank's fraud team.

OTPs defeat attacks that reuse stolen passwords, but they can still be phished in real time or intercepted through SIM-swap fraud. The HOTP (counter-based) and TOTP (time-based) algorithms let devices generate codes offline. In India, a second factor, usually an SMS OTP, has long been mandatory for online card payments.

2. One true pairing

Texting & Internet Slang · Fandom and Fan Fiction Abbreviations

A fan's favorite romantic pairing of two characters, the "ship" they support above all others, as in "these two are my OTP." Used across TV, anime, book and game fandoms.

Example: Season three finally gave my OTP a kiss and I screamed into a pillow.

Fandom slang since the 1990s and central to "shipping" culture on LiveJournal, Tumblr and AO3. Related terms include NOTP (a pairing a fan dislikes) and BrOTP (a favorite friendship). In technology OTP means one-time password, and in texting "on the phone," so context matters. Ship wars over rival OTPs can turn heated.

3. Opioid treatment program

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Federally certified clinic, regulated by SAMHSA under 42 CFR Part 8, that provides methadone and other medications for opioid use disorder with counseling and monitoring. OTPs are the only settings where methadone can be dispensed for addiction treatment in the US.

Example: Daily dosing at OTP, methadone 90 mg; eligible for take-home doses after 30 days.

Often called methadone clinics. A 2024 federal rule update made permanent many pandemic-era flexibilities, including more take-home doses and telehealth starts for buprenorphine. Patients typically attend daily at first. Pronounced as letters.

4. On the phone

Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations

Tells someone the writer is currently in a call and cannot talk or reply quickly. Used in texts and workplace chat as a quick status update.

Example: Otp with the bank, I'll call you back in 10.

In fandom, OTP means "one true pairing," and in security it means "one-time password," the code sent for two-factor login, so context matters. The phone meaning appears mostly in quick texts between friends and coworkers.

5. One-trick pony

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

Player who plays only one character, often at a very high level, especially in League of Legends, as in "Yasuo OTP." Used on profiles, streams and stat sites.

Example: He's a Thresh OTP with over a million mastery points.

Some OTPs climb ranks by mastering one champion deeply, while critics say they struggle when that character is banned or weak. In fandom OTP means "one true pairing," and in texting "on the phone," so context distinguishes them.
