OVA stands for Original video animation, a fandom and fan fiction abbreviation.

Anime produced for direct release on home video, DVD or Blu-ray rather than for TV broadcast or theaters. OVAs often add side stories or extra episodes to a series.

Example: The OVA covers a side story about the captain's past.

Usage notes

The first OVA is usually identified as Dallos (1983). OVAs flourished in the 1980s and 1990s, when they allowed more experimental or mature content than TV. Also called OAV in older sources. Streaming has blurred the distinction.
