1. Role-play

Texting & Internet Slang · Fandom and Fan Fiction Abbreviations

Collaborative storytelling in which participants write or act as characters, used on forums, Tumblr, Discord and in multiplayer game servers such as GTA RP and Minecraft.

Example: Anyone want to RP a fantasy adventure in the new server channel?

Text RP grew on 1990s forums and IRC; "GTA RP" servers, where players act out lives in Grand Theft Auto V, became a major Twitch genre from 2019. RP communities set rules for consent, posting length and OOC talk. Outside fandom, RP also stands for Received Pronunciation, the prestige accent of British English.

2. Radical prostatectomy

Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations

Surgical removal of the entire prostate and seminal vesicles, with or without pelvic lymph nodes, to treat localized prostate cancer. Main long-term side effects are urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

Example: Post-RP PSA undetectable at 6 weeks; continence improving with pelvic floor exercises.

The modern nerve-sparing technique was developed by Patrick Walsh at Johns Hopkins in the early 1980s. A rising PSA after RP signals biochemical recurrence. In ophthalmology RP means retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited retinal disease, so the context identifies the meaning.

3. Retinitis pigmentosa

Medical · Ophthalmology & ENT Abbreviations

Group of inherited retinal diseases in which rod and later cone photoreceptors degenerate, typically causing night blindness in youth, then progressive loss of peripheral vision (tunnel vision). It affects about 1 in 4,000 people.

Example: RP with bone-spicule pigmentation and constricted fields; genetic testing and low-vision referral.

More than 50 genes can cause RP. In 2017 the FDA approved voretigene neparvovec, the first US gene therapy for an inherited disease, for retinal dystrophy caused by RPE65 mutations. Bone-spicule pigment clumps are the classic exam finding. In urology RP means radical prostatectomy.

4. Republic of the Philippines

Geography & Places · Country Name Abbreviations

Abbreviation widely used in Philippine government and news for the country, as in RP–US relations. It is also the Philippines' international vehicle registration code.

Example: The RP–China dispute over the shoal was raised at the ASEAN summit.

The ISO codes are PH and PHL, and Filipinos often use PH online. The official name in Filipino is Republika ng Pilipinas. The country takes its name from King Philip II of Spain.

5. Rupiah (Rp)

Business & Finance · Currency Abbreviations

Local abbreviation for the Indonesian rupiah, placed before the amount on price tags, menus and receipts, as in Rp25.000, with a dot as the thousands separator.

Example: Nasi goreng Rp35.000, es teh manis Rp8.000.

The ISO code is IDR. Because prices are large numbers, shops also shorten thousands to rb (ribu), as in 35rb, or to k. A comma marks decimals in Indonesian usage, though rupiah prices rarely have any.

6. Received Pronunciation

Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations

Names the accent traditionally regarded as standard in British English, associated with southern England, private schools and, historically, the BBC. Dictionaries and teaching materials long used it as the model for British pronunciation.

Example: Learner's dictionaries list the RP pronunciation of "bath" with a long vowel, /bɑːθ/.

The phonetician Daniel Jones popularized the term in the 1920s; "received" meant "accepted in polite society." Only a small minority of Britons speak RP natively. Recent descriptions increasingly use labels such as "Standard Southern British English" or "General British" for the modern teaching model.

7. Religious Program Specialist

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations

Sailors who support Navy chaplains by organizing worship services, managing religious programs and providing confidential support to people seeking counseling. In combat zones they also serve as the chaplain's armed security.

Example: RP2 Lane set up the field altar and guarded the chaplain during the memorial service.

Chaplains are noncombatants who do not carry weapons, so RPs deploying with Marine units are trained in combat skills to protect them. RPs need not share the chaplain's faith. The Army equivalent is the religious affairs specialist, formerly called chaplain assistant.

8. Relief pitcher

Sports · Baseball Abbreviations

Pitcher who enters after the starter, from the bullpen. Relievers include closers, setup men, middle relievers and long relievers.

Example: Three RP combined for four scoreless innings to protect the lead.

Since 2020 MLB requires a pitcher to face at least three batters or finish an inning, ending the "LOOGY" (lefty one-out guy) specialist role. Bullpens now pitch roughly 40 percent of all innings.

9. Rating Pending

Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations

ESRB placeholder shown in advertising and preorder listings for games that have been submitted for a rating but not yet rated.

Example: Trailers for unreleased games show an RP logo instead of an age rating.

Publishers must replace RP with the final rating once assigned. A variant, "RP - Likely Mature 17+", signals the expected rating. In other contexts RP means role-play or received pronunciation.
