1. Code of Federal Regulations
Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations · also used in government
Codification of the general and permanent rules issued by federal executive agencies, organized into 50 titles by subject, such as Title 21 (Food and Drugs) and Title 29 (Labor). It is published by the Office of the Federal Register and the Government Publishing Office.
Example: Under 29 C.F.R. § 541.602, an exempt employee must receive a predetermined salary each pay period.
Each title is revised once a year on a staggered schedule: titles 1 to 16 as of January 1, 17 to 27 as of April 1, 28 to 41 as of July 1 and 42 to 50 as of October 1. The online eCFR is updated daily but is not the official legal edition. New and amended rules appear first in the Federal Register.
2. Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)
Organizations & Companies · Nonprofit Abbreviations
Nonpartisan membership organization and think tank on US foreign policy, which publishes the journal Foreign Affairs and hosts meetings with world leaders at its New York headquarters and Washington office.
Example: A CFR fellow argued that the sanctions would have little effect.
Founded in 1921 by diplomats, bankers and scholars after the Paris Peace Conference, it launched Foreign Affairs in 1922. Its members include former officials, executives and academics. In US regulations, CFR means the Code of Federal Regulations.
3. Cost and Freight (CFR)
Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations
Sea and inland waterway rule in which the seller pays the cost of carriage to the named port of destination, but risk passes to the buyer once the goods are loaded on board at the port of shipment. The buyer arranges its own insurance.
Example: Coal is sold CFR Qingdao, so the buyer insures the cargo from the load port.
Formerly abbreviated C&F or CNF, forms still seen in commodity contracts. As with all C-terms, the seller's cost responsibility extends further than its risk.
