1. Out of character
Texting & Internet Slang · Fandom and Fan Fiction Abbreviations
Describes a character in fan fiction behaving unlike their canon personality, or marks a role-player speaking as themselves rather than as their character, as in "OOC: brb dinner."
Example: Great plot, but the captain is so OOC in chapter five.
Calling a fic OOC is a common criticism, while role-play communities use OOC brackets or channels to separate personal chat from story. The opposite is IC (in character). In everyday chat, "ooc" can mean "out of curiosity," a different sense.
2. Out of curiosity
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Signals that a question is asked casually, not to judge or pressure. Common in texts and forums when asking about prices, salaries or personal choices.
Example: Ooc, how much did you end up paying for the flight?
In role-play and fan communities OOC means "out of character," where a player steps outside their role. Context distinguishes the two: a question following it signals curiosity. Softens questions that could otherwise seem nosy.
