PCI DSS stands for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, a cybersecurity abbreviation.

The security standard every organization that stores, processes or transmits payment card data must follow, covering network security, encryption, access control, monitoring and testing. Card brands and acquiring banks enforce compliance.

Example: Outsourcing checkout to the payment provider shrank our PCI DSS scope to a short self-assessment questionnaire.

Usage notes

Created in 2004 by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and JCB, and managed by the PCI Security Standards Council since 2006. Version 4.0 was released in 2022, and its new requirements became mandatory in March 2025. Merchants prove compliance through self-assessment questionnaires or audits by qualified assessors, depending on transaction volume.
