NOAC stands for Novel oral anticoagulant, a drug class abbreviation.
Older name for direct oral anticoagulants such as apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran and edoxaban, later reinterpreted as "non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant". It is still common in European and older literature.
Example: Patient on NOAC (rivaroxaban 20 mg with evening meal); last dose 0800.
Usage notes
ISMP lists NOAC as error-prone because it has been read as "no anticoagulation", a dangerous misunderstanding before procedures. The drugs are also no longer "novel", the first having been approved in 2010. Most guidelines and institutions now use DOAC.
