NAI stands for Neuraminidase inhibitor, a drug class abbreviation.
Influenza antivirals, oseltamivir (Tamiflu), zanamivir (Relenza) and IV peramivir, that block the viral neuraminidase enzyme and stop new virus particles from leaving infected cells.
Example: Flu A positive, admitted: start NAI oseltamivir 75 mg BID x 5 days regardless of symptom duration.
Usage notes
Outpatient benefit is greatest when started within 48 hours of symptoms, but guidelines recommend treating hospitalized and high-risk patients regardless of timing. Inhaled zanamivir can trigger bronchospasm in people with asthma or COPD. Baloxavir (Xofluza) belongs to a different class, the cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitors.
