NRTI stands for Nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, a drug class abbreviation.
HIV drugs that mimic DNA building blocks and stop the virus copying its RNA into DNA. Tenofovir, emtricitabine, lamivudine, abacavir and zidovudine are NRTIs, and two of them typically form the "backbone" of a combination regimen.
Example: Regimen: INSTI plus two NRTIs (TAF/FTC); HBV coinfection covered.
Usage notes
Also written NtRTI for the nucleotide analog tenofovir. Older NRTIs such as stavudine (d4T) and didanosine (ddI) caused lactic acidosis, fat loss and nerve damage and are no longer recommended. Tenofovir, emtricitabine and lamivudine also suppress hepatitis B.
