N.D. Ill. stands for United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, a court abbreviation.
Chicago's federal trial court, sitting in the Dirksen Federal Building and in Rockford. One of the largest districts by caseload, it hosts many consumer class actions, multidistrict litigation proceedings and biometric privacy suits against employers and technology companies.
Example: The brand owner sued 150 anonymous online sellers in N.D. Ill. using a sealed Schedule A.
Usage notes
Since the late 2010s the court has received thousands of so-called Schedule A cases, in which brand owners sue large numbers of online storefronts at once for counterfeiting and seek quick asset freezes; several judges have criticized the practice. Appeals go to the Seventh Circuit, which sits in the same building. Citation form: "(N.D. Ill. 2020)".
