1. Law Journal
Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations
Element of law journal titles in citations, as in Yale L.J. for the Yale Law Journal or Duke L.J. for the Duke Law Journal. In this sense it marks a scholarly periodical rather than a judicial title.
Example: See Lina M. Khan, Note, Amazon's Antitrust Paradox, 126 Yale L.J. 710 (2017).
The Yale Law Journal was founded in 1891. Table T13 closes up "L.J." because both words are reduced to single capitals. In English case reports, LJ written after a name instead means Lord Justice of Appeal, so context tells the two apart.
2. Lord Justice of Appeal
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations
Title used in England and Wales for judges of the Court of Appeal, written after the surname without full stops: "Arden LJ". Women on that court are Lady Justices, also abbreviated LJ, and the plural is LJJ.
Example: Giving the leading judgment, Bingham LJ held that the onerous clause had not been fairly brought to the buyer's attention.
Related titles include MR (Master of the Rolls, head of the Civil Division) and LCJ (Lord Chief Justice). In citations, L.J. also abbreviates Law Journal, as in Yale L.J.; context makes clear which is meant. Northern Ireland's Court of Appeal uses the same title.
