OSG stands for Office of the Solicitor General, a court abbreviation.

Division of the US Department of Justice that conducts and supervises the federal government's litigation in the Supreme Court and must approve every government appeal in the lower courts. A small group of career assistants and deputies works under the Solicitor General.

Example: The brief, signed by attorneys in the OSG, defended the agency's reading of the statute.

Usage notes

OSG lawyers argue a large share of Supreme Court cases each term, either as a party or as amicus curiae. An agency needs OSG approval before it can appeal an adverse ruling, seek rehearing en banc or file an amicus brief in a court of appeals. Many state attorney general offices have created their own OSG units.
