PTAB stands for Patent Trial and Appeal Board, a court abbreviation.

Administrative tribunal within the US Patent and Trademark Office that hears appeals from patent examiners' rejections and conducts trials challenging issued patents, chiefly inter partes review and post-grant review. Panels of administrative patent judges decide the cases, and appeals go to the Federal Circuit.

Example: The accused infringer petitioned the PTAB for inter partes review of all asserted claims.

Usage notes

Created by the America Invents Act, it began operating on September 16, 2012, replacing the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. In United States v. Arthrex (2021) the Supreme Court held that the USPTO Director must be able to review its final decisions. Pronounced "P-tab"; early claim-cancellation rates led critics to call it a "patent death squad".
