N.D. Tex. stands for United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, a court abbreviation.

Federal trial court for Dallas, Fort Worth and much of north and west Texas, including Amarillo, Lubbock, Abilene and Wichita Falls. Several of its divisions have a single active judge, so litigants who file there can predict who will hear the case, a practice critics call judge shopping.

Example: The challenge to the federal rule was filed in the Amarillo division of N.D. Tex., where one judge hears nearly every case.

Usage notes

In 2024 the Judicial Conference issued guidance urging random assignment of cases seeking statewide or nationwide injunctions, partly in response to such filings; N.D. Tex. declined to adopt it. The court issued widely reported rulings on the abortion drug mifepristone (2023) and on the FTC's noncompete ban (2024).
