Immunosuppressant used with other drugs to prevent rejection of kidney, heart and liver transplants and to treat lupus nephritis and other autoimmune diseases. Brand name CellCept.
Example: MMF 1 g PO BID with tacrolimus and prednisone after kidney transplant.
Mycophenolate causes miscarriage and birth defects, so a REMS program requires counseling and reliable contraception for people who can become pregnant. Gastrointestinal upset is common; an enteric-coated mycophenolic acid form (Myfortic) may be better tolerated. MMF and mycophenolic acid doses are not equivalent milligram for milligram.
2. Money market fund

Mutual fund that invests in high-quality, short-term debt such as Treasury bills, commercial paper and repurchase agreements, aiming to preserve capital and provide liquidity while paying interest. It is widely used for cash management by individuals and corporate treasurers.
Example: Uninvested cash in the brokerage account is swept into an MMF that holds only Treasury bills.
Unlike bank deposits, MMFs are not FDIC-insured. US money market fund assets exceeded $6 trillion in 2024. Reforms after the 2008 and 2020 market stresses introduced floating NAVs for institutional prime funds and, from 2024, mandatory liquidity fees in some cases. A bank money market account is a different product.
