MSCI stands for Morgan Stanley Capital International, a stock market & investing abbreviation.

Index provider whose benchmarks, such as MSCI World, MSCI Emerging Markets and MSCI ACWI, are tracked by trillions of dollars of investment funds. Its decisions on which countries count as developed, emerging or frontier markets can move large flows of capital.

Example: Inclusion in the MSCI Emerging Markets index is expected to bring $2 billion of passive inflows into the country's stocks.

Usage notes

The business grew out of Capital International indices that Morgan Stanley licensed in 1986, and it became independent through a 2007 IPO and 2009 spin-off; the company now uses only the name MSCI Inc. It also publishes ESG ratings and risk analytics. Its annual market classification reviews are closely watched by governments seeking upgrades.
