1. Master limited partnership

Publicly traded limited partnership, common in US energy infrastructure such as pipelines and storage, that combines the tax benefits of a partnership with the liquidity of a listed stock. MLPs generally pay no corporate income tax if most of their income comes from qualifying sources.

Example: The pipeline MLP yields 7.5 percent, but investors receive a Schedule K-1 rather than a 1099.

Unitholders receive K-1 tax forms, which complicate tax filing and can create unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) in retirement accounts. The qualifying-income rules come from Section 7704 of the Internal Revenue Code. Many large MLPs converted to corporations after a 2018 FERC tax policy change.

2. Multilayer perceptron

The basic fully connected feed-forward neural network, made of an input layer, one or more hidden layers and an output layer, with each neuron linked to every neuron in the next layer. Transformers contain MLP blocks between their attention layers.

Example: Start with a two-layer MLP as a baseline before trying anything fancier.

Extends Frank Rosenblatt's single-layer perceptron, whose limitations were highlighted by Marvin Minsky and Seymour Papert's 1969 book "Perceptrons". The universal approximation theorem shows that one hidden layer with enough neurons can approximate any continuous function. Transformer papers often call the MLP block the feed-forward network.
