REMS stands for Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Drug safety program the FDA can require for medicines with serious risks, beyond normal labeling. Elements can include medication guides, prescriber training, pharmacy certification, patient enrollment and lab monitoring before each fill.
Example: Isotretinoin can't be dispensed until the iPLEDGE REMS confirms her negative pregnancy test.
Usage notes
The FDA gained REMS authority under the FDA Amendments Act of 2007. Well-known programs include iPLEDGE for isotretinoin, the opioid analgesic REMS, and REMS for transmucosal fentanyl and some multiple myeloma drugs. Critics argue that some REMS create access barriers, and the FDA has modified or removed several programs over time.
