MDMA stands for 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a drug abbreviation.
Stimulant and empathogen sold illicitly as ecstasy or molly, producing euphoria and feelings of closeness. Dangers include hyperthermia, dehydration or water intoxication with low sodium, and serotonin toxicity, especially at crowded events.
Example: Collapsed at a rave after MDMA: temp 41.2 C, Na 124; active cooling started.
Usage notes
Merck patented MDMA in 1912 as a chemical intermediate. It is Schedule I in the US. Clinical trials of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD showed promising results, but in 2024 the FDA declined to approve the first application, requesting additional study. Street "molly" frequently contains other drugs such as synthetic cathinones.
