1. Motherf***er
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Highly profane word used as an insult, an intensifier or, in some slang, a neutral reference to a person or thing ("this mf really cut in line"). Common on social media and in texts among teens and adults.
Example: This mf really parked across three spaces at the grocery store.
One of the strongest English swear words, so the abbreviation is still offensive in most settings. In hip-hop and African American slang it can be neutral or even admiring, depending on context. Never appropriate in professional or school messages.
2. Mutual fund
Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations
Pooled investment vehicle that collects money from many investors to buy a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds or other securities under a professional manager. US mutual fund shares are bought and sold once a day at the fund's net asset value.
Example: Her retirement account holds two MFs, an index fund and a bond fund.
In India, "MF" is the standard abbreviation in advertising and the media, as in the mandatory disclaimer "Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks." US mutual funds are regulated under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Unlike ETFs, mutual funds do not trade on exchanges during the day.
3. Mezzo-forte (mf)
Arts & Entertainment · Music Abbreviations
Dynamic marking meaning moderately loud, louder than mezzo-piano (mp) and softer than forte. It is often a performer's default "normal" volume.
Example: The verse is marked mf, building to forte in the chorus.
Italian "mezzo" means half. Notation software often defaults to mf when no dynamic is written. Without a marking, choirs and bands generally assume something close to mezzo-forte.
4. Saint Martin
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
French northern half of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, with Marigot as its capital; the southern half is the Dutch Sint Maarten (SX). The island is one of the smallest in the world divided between two countries.
Example: Shipping systems need MF for Marigot and SX for Philipsburg, although they share one island.
The French side is an overseas collectivity using the euro, while the Dutch side uses the Caribbean guilder. The alpha-3 code is MAF.
