1. Month over month
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations · also used in measurement
Percentage change in a figure compared with the previous month, used for fast-moving metrics such as website traffic, subscription sales, retail sales and inflation. It shows short-term trends but is noisy and sensitive to seasonality and the number of working days.
Example: Monthly recurring revenue grew 6 percent MoM, the strongest gain this year.
Also written M/M or m/m. Economists report monthly inflation and retail sales MoM, usually seasonally adjusted. In meeting notes, MoM can instead mean minutes of meeting, so context determines the meaning.
2. Milk of magnesia (MOM)
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Suspension of magnesium hydroxide used as a saline laxative and antacid. A typical laxative dose of 30 to 60 mL produces a bowel movement within about 30 minutes to 6 hours.
Example: MOM 30 mL PO daily PRN constipation if no BM in 2 days.
Phillips' Milk of Magnesia is the best-known brand, sold since the 19th century. The milky appearance gave the product its name; it contains no milk. Like other magnesium products, it should be avoided in significant kidney disease because magnesium can build up to toxic levels.
3. Minutes of meeting
Writing & Everyday · Email and Office Abbreviations · also used in business
Refers to the written record of a meeting's discussion, decisions and action items, circulated afterward to attendees. The abbreviation appears mainly in corporate email and project documentation.
Example: Please find the MoM from today's vendor review below, with action owners highlighted.
British and American offices usually say "the minutes" or "meeting notes." Good minutes record decisions and owners rather than verbatim discussion. In finance and analytics, MoM means "month over month," a comparison with the previous month, and "Mom" is the familiar word for mother, so the mixed capitalization helps.
