1. Minimum inhibitory concentration
Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations · also used in medicine
Lowest concentration of an antibiotic or antifungal that prevents visible growth of a microorganism in the laboratory. Clinical microbiology labs compare MICs with standard breakpoints to report whether a pathogen is susceptible or resistant to each drug.
Example: The isolate had a vancomycin MIC of 2 mg/L, at the upper limit of susceptibility.
MICs are measured by broth microdilution, agar dilution or gradient strips. Breakpoints are set by bodies such as CLSI in the United States and EUCAST in Europe, and they sometimes differ. The related minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) measures killing rather than growth inhibition.
2. Micah (Mic.)
Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations
Prophetic book of seven chapters by Micah of Moresheth, a contemporary of Isaiah, which predicts a ruler from Bethlehem (5:2) and summarizes true religion as "to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God" (6:8).
Example: Mic. 6:8 is one of the most quoted verses in social justice sermons.
SBL writes Mic, and short forms use Mi. Matthew's Gospel cites Micah's Bethlehem prophecy in the story of the Magi. Micah 4:3, about beating swords into plowshares, also appears in Isaiah 2:4.
