1. Mechanism of injury

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

Description of how an injury occurred, including forces, speed, height of fall and objects involved. It helps predict hidden injuries and guides trauma triage.

Example: MOI: fall from 15-foot ladder onto concrete, landed on feet.

Significant mechanisms, such as ejection from a vehicle or falls over 20 feet in adults, are part of field triage guidelines. EMS crews report MOI to the receiving hospital. NOI, nature of illness, is the medical counterpart.

2. Multiplicity of infection

Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations

Ratio of infectious virus particles (or bacteria) to target cells in an infection experiment. At an MOI of 1, there is on average one infectious particle per cell, though Poisson statistics mean some cells receive none and others several.

Example: Cells were infected at an MOI of 0.1 and harvested 48 hours later.

An MOI of about 3 infects roughly 95% of cells, which is why high MOIs are used for synchronous one-step growth experiments. Gene therapy and CAR-T manufacturing also specify viral vector doses as MOI.
