Federal grant-making agency that supports research, teaching, preservation and public programs in history, literature, philosophy and other humanities, largely through grants to universities, museums, libraries and state humanities councils.
Example: The documentary series on the Erie Canal was funded in part by an NEH grant.
Created in 1965 by the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act, which also established the NEA. It is led by a Chair appointed by the President. In 2025 the agency terminated many previously awarded grants, prompting lawsuits from state humanities councils and scholarly associations.
2. Nehemiah (Neh.)

Book of 13 chapters in which Nehemiah, cupbearer to the Persian king, returns to Jerusalem as governor and organizes the rebuilding of the city walls, completed in 52 days (6:15). It continues the story of Ezra.
Example: Leadership seminars often cite Neh. 2 as a model of planning and vision.
All the major systems agree on Neh: SBL without a period, Chicago's traditional list with one, and Catholic Bibles without. The book is written largely in the first person, as Nehemiah's memoir. Older Catholic Bibles call it 2 Esdras.
