LVOT stands for Left ventricular outflow tract, a cardiology abbreviation.
Passage through which blood leaves the left ventricle toward the aortic valve, bordered by the septum and the anterior mitral leaflet. Echocardiographers measure its diameter and flow velocity to calculate stroke volume and aortic valve area and to detect dynamic obstruction.
Example: Resting LVOT gradient 18 mmHg rising to 74 mmHg with Valsalva, consistent with provocable obstruction.
Usage notes
LVOT obstruction is the hallmark of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy but can also appear in dehydrated, hypercontractile patients or after mitral repair. The diameter is squared in the continuity equation, so small measurement errors produce large errors in calculated valve area. Before TAVR, CT measures the outflow tract and annulus to size the valve.
