LVH stands for Left ventricular hypertrophy, a cardiology abbreviation.

Thickening of the left ventricular wall, most often from long-standing high blood pressure or aortic stenosis, and also seen in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and trained athletes. It can be suspected on ECG using voltage criteria but is confirmed by echocardiography or cardiac MRI.

Example: ECG meets Sokolow-Lyon voltage criteria for LVH with strain pattern; echo ordered.

Usage notes

The Sokolow-Lyon criterion (S in V1 plus R in V5 or V6 of 35 mm or more) dates from 1949; the Cornell criteria are an alternative. ECG criteria are specific but miss many cases. LVH is an independent risk factor for heart failure, arrhythmia and stroke, and it can regress with good blood pressure control. "Strain pattern" means downsloping ST depression with T-wave inversion in lateral leads.
