1. Michigan
Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations
The Great Lakes State, admitted on January 26, 1837, as the 26th state, is split into two peninsulas joined by the five-mile Mackinac Bridge. Lansing is the capital and Detroit the largest city, the historic center of the American auto industry.
Example: Recall notices went to owners in Detroit, MI and surrounding Wayne County.
Mich. is the standard AP and traditional abbreviation. MI was adopted in 1963 (MC, MH and MG are not valid), and eight state names begin with M, so MI is easily swapped with MN, MS or MO. Residents often hold up a right hand as a map of the Lower Peninsula.
2. Mile (mi)
Units & Measurements · US Customary and Imperial Unit Abbreviations
The statute mile of 5,280 feet, exactly 1,609.344 meters, used for road distances and speed limits in the United States and the United Kingdom. Car odometers, running races and flight distances for frequent-flier programs are measured in miles.
Example: Exit 42 is 3 mi ahead; the service plaza follows 12 mi later.
The word comes from Latin mille passus, a thousand paces of a Roman legion. An English statute of 1593 set the mile at 8 furlongs, producing the odd figure of 5,280 feet. To convert, multiply miles by 1.609 for kilometers. Sea and air navigation instead use the longer nautical mile, about 1.15 statute miles.
3. Myocardial infarction
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Death of heart muscle caused by prolonged loss of blood flow, usually when a ruptured coronary plaque triggers a clot. Diagnosis rests on a rise and fall of cardiac troponin plus symptoms, ECG changes or imaging evidence of ischemia. In the United States roughly 805,000 people have one each year.
Example: Admitted with chest pressure radiating to the left arm; troponin peaked at 12 ng/mL, consistent with acute MI.
The lay term is "heart attack," which differs from cardiac arrest, a sudden loss of heartbeat that an MI can trigger. The Fourth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction (2018) sorts events into types 1 to 5, separating plaque-rupture MI (type 1) from supply-demand mismatch (type 2) and procedure-related events. An "old MI" on a problem list refers to a healed scar seen on ECG or imaging.
4. Motivational interviewing
Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations
Collaborative counseling style that helps people resolve ambivalence about change by drawing out their own reasons and commitment, rather than lecturing or confronting. It is widely used for substance use, smoking, diet, exercise and medication adherence.
Example: MI used to explore ambivalence about drinking; patient set goal of 2 alcohol-free days weekly.
Developed by William Miller, who described it in 1983, and expanded with Stephen Rollnick. Core skills are summarized by the acronym OARS: open questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries. Listening for "change talk" is central. In cardiology MI means myocardial infarction, by far the most common use of the letters in hospitals.
