CategoriesMedical

MINOCA stands for Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries, a cardiology abbreviation.

Heart attack confirmed by troponin and clinical findings in which angiography shows no artery narrowed by 50 percent or more. It accounts for roughly 5 to 10 percent of myocardial infarctions and is more common in women and younger patients.

Example: Troponin-positive chest pain, cath with no significant stenosis: working diagnosis MINOCA, cardiac MRI next.

Usage notes

MINOCA is a working diagnosis that demands a search for the cause: plaque disruption, coronary spasm, spontaneous dissection or embolism, or mimics such as myocarditis and takotsubo syndrome, which cardiac MRI can identify. An AHA scientific statement in 2019 set out the diagnostic approach. Pronounced "mih-NO-kuh."
