LVEF stands for Left ventricular ejection fraction, a cardiology abbreviation.
Fraction of blood ejected from the left ventricle with each contraction, the formal term used in guidelines, trial eligibility and device criteria. Thresholds of 40, 35 and 50 percent determine heart failure category, ICD eligibility and cardiotoxicity monitoring decisions.
Example: LVEF by biplane Simpson's method 32%; meets criteria for a primary prevention ICD.
Usage notes
The biplane method of disks (modified Simpson's rule) is the standard echo technique, while 3D echo and cardiac MRI are more reproducible. Variability of about 5 to 10 percentage points between studies means small changes should be interpreted cautiously. In cardio-oncology, a fall of 10 points or more to below 50 percent is a common definition of cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction.
