LQTS stands for Long QT syndrome, a cardiology abbreviation.
Disorder of ventricular repolarization that prolongs the QT interval and predisposes to torsades de pointes, fainting and sudden death. It may be congenital, caused by ion-channel gene variants such as KCNQ1, KCNH2 and SCN5A, or acquired from drugs and electrolyte disturbances.
Example: Teen with exertional syncope while swimming; QTc 510 ms, genetic testing for LQTS sent.
Usage notes
Triggers differ by genotype: swimming and exercise in LQT1, sudden noises such as alarm clocks in LQT2, and sleep in LQT3. Beta-blockers are first-line, and patients should avoid QT-prolonging drugs, a list maintained by CredibleMeds. The congenital form affects roughly 1 in 2,000 people. Romano-Ward and Jervell and Lange-Nielsen are older syndrome names.
