1. Lines
Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations
Refers to two or more lines of a poem or text, as in "ll. 10-25," in citations and literary commentary. The doubled letter marks the plural, as pp. does for pages.
Example: Wordsworth describes the landscape he revisits after five years in ll. 1-22 of "Tintern Abbey."
Because ll. can be misread as the number 11, MLA advises writing "lines" in full. Line numbers for well-known poems are standardized in scholarly editions, so citations can be checked in any good text. The doubling convention also gives pp., ff. and MSS.
2. Lucky loser (LL)
Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations
Tennis player who lost in the final round of qualifying but enters the main draw when another player withdraws before the tournament begins. Draw sheets mark these players LL.
Example: The LL took full advantage, reaching the quarterfinals after replacing an injured seed.
Lucky losers are usually chosen from the highest-ranked qualifying-round losers. Some have gone on to win titles, which makes the "lucky" tag especially apt. In draws, Q marks players who came through qualifying.
