HepB stands for Hepatitis B vaccine, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Vaccine that prevents hepatitis B infection, given in a series beginning at birth. Babies of mothers with hepatitis B also receive hepatitis B immune globulin within 12 hours of birth to prevent transmission.
Example: HepB dose 1 given within 24 hours of birth; mother HBsAg negative.
Usage notes
The US has recommended universal infant hepatitis B vaccination since 1991, which has made childhood infection rare. Infants infected at birth have about a 90 percent chance of chronic infection, which is why the birth dose matters. The vaccine contains a recombinant viral surface protein and cannot cause infection.
