1. Heal over time

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

Effect that restores health gradually over a period, such as regeneration or renew spells, rather than in one burst. Healers keep HOTs active on tanks to smooth out incoming damage. Also written HoT.

Example: Keep your HOTs rolling on the tank during the burn phase.

Common in MMORPG healer kits, such as druids in World of Warcraft. Contrasted with direct heals, which restore health instantly. The capitalization helps avoid confusion with the ordinary word "hot."

2. High-occupancy toll

Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations

Lane that is free or discounted for carpools and buses but open to solo drivers who pay a toll, which often varies with traffic to keep the lane moving. HOT lanes are common in California, Texas, Virginia and other states.

Example: The HOT lane toll jumped to $18 at 5:30, but it saved me forty minutes.

California's SR 91 Express Lanes, opened in 1995, pioneered variable tolling, and the I-15 lanes in San Diego were an early conversion of HOV to HOT. Tolls are collected electronically, usually requiring a transponder that can be switched to carpool mode. Critics have called them "Lexus lanes."
