I-frames stands for Invincibility frames, a gaming slang abbreviation.

Brief window, measured in animation frames, during which a character cannot be damaged, typically during a dodge roll, dash or special move. A core mechanic in action games such as Dark Souls, Elden Ring and Monster Hunter.

Example: Roll through the sweep attack, the i-frames will carry you right past it.

Usage notes

Experienced players time dodges so that an attack lands during their i-frames, which can look like passing straight through a blade. Different games and builds give different numbers of frames; equipment weight changes them in Dark Souls. Speedrunners and challenge runners exploit them heavily.
