1. International Driving Permit
Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations
Booklet that translates a driver's license into multiple languages and is required or recommended for driving in many foreign countries. It is valid only together with the holder's home license.
Example: Japan won't rent you a car without an IDP, so get one from AAA before the trip.
In the US, only AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance are authorized by the State Department to issue IDPs; online sellers of "international driver's licenses" are often scams. Permits follow the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna road traffic conventions and are valid for one year. Some countries recognize only one convention's version.
2. Individual development plan
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Document, agreed between an employee and manager, setting career goals and the training, assignments and mentoring needed to reach them over the coming year.
Example: Before the review, draft an IDP with two skills you want to build.
IDPs are standard in US federal agencies and many corporations. Outside HR, IDP usually means internally displaced person in humanitarian contexts.
3. Imminent danger pay
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Special pay for service members on duty in designated areas where they face the threat of physical harm from civil insurrection, war or terrorism, paid for each day in the area up to a monthly amount.
Example: IDP and tax-free pay made the deployment a chance to pay off the car loan.
Hostile fire pay (HFP) is the related payment for members actually exposed to hostile fire or explosions; a member cannot receive both for the same month. The Defense Department reviews the list of IDP areas periodically. In humanitarian contexts, IDP means internally displaced person.
