HOV stands for High-occupancy vehicle, a driving abbreviation.
Lane reserved for vehicles carrying at least two or three people, as well as buses and sometimes motorcycles and clean-air vehicles, to encourage carpooling and speed up travel. HOV lanes are marked with diamond symbols.
Example: Use the HOV lane during rush hour only if you have at least two people in the car.
Usage notes
Also called carpool lanes or diamond lanes. One of the first was the Shirley Highway (I-395) busway in Northern Virginia, opened to buses in 1969 and to carpools in 1973. Violations carry fines that vary by state. Many HOV lanes have been converted to HOT lanes, which let solo drivers pay a toll.
