AV1 stands for AOMedia Video 1, a file format abbreviation.

Royalty-free video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media, offering compression comparable to or better than HEVC. YouTube, Netflix and video-calling services use it, and recent GPUs and phones decode it in hardware.

Example: Netflix streams AV1 to TVs that support it, cutting bandwidth for the same picture quality.

Usage notes

The Alliance for Open Media was founded in 2015 by companies including Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix, and the AV1 specification was finalized in 2018. It draws on Google's VP9 work and other contributions. Hardware decoding arrived in Nvidia RTX 30 cards (2020) and Apple's A17 Pro and M3 chips (2023). Pronounced "A-V-one".
